About this site

I am currently a student studying chemistry, biology and maths, from these choices you may rightly assume that I have a passion for the world of science. I have looked in depth at the fundamental place that science has in todays society, how it’s rapid development changes the way we act as humans and how medical developments have improved the quality of life for so many people. Furthermore, having the opportunity to learn about the complexities of the human body whilst also appreciating the countless parts I am yet to understand is something I value incredibly highly.

Having said this as I learn more about how the human body functions it has sparked an ambition in me to understand how such a logical and material thing is intertwined in society, how it forms a base for philosophy, art and human interaction. This is why I decided to create my website, EthicsInGenes, the purpose is to educate readers about the developments in modern day gene therapy and what it is capable of doing and then looking at the ethical issues and concerns that it rises on a wider scale such as, would this only benefit the rich and wealthy? or at what point is gene therapy crossing over into genetic enhancement and how can this have a negative impact on society?

Another important purpose of this website is to look at the day to day issues with gene therapy in the form of case study’s which will raise questions such as Who has the right to information about a persons genes, just the person directly or those closely related of whom the information might also effect and be relevant to them? and How should medical professionals conduct themselves when faced with issues regarding confidentiality and consent?

This platform has been created to educate and allow readers to make their own minds up on these important ethical issues, it is not made to tell readers how to think but instead give them food for thought to deepen their understanding on the relationship between science and philosophy.
